Mycology and Plant Tissue Culture Protection

Plant or fungi tissue culturing is highly susceptible to contaminants like mold and other particulates. Laminar flow, biological safety cabinets, and other Air Science fume hoods are used to protect plant tissue cultures and mushroom cultures from contamination and enable effective crossbreeding and germination.

Mycology Fume Hood

Mycology is a broad field that goes beyond medical and pharmaceutical research. Mycologists also work in the food and beverage industry as well as agricultural and environmental industries. Laminar flow hoods ensure mushroom cultures on the work surface are protected from airborne contaminants. Protecting plant cultures or mushroom cultures using laminar flow hoods during farming, agricultural, or mycology applications helps create a more controlled growth condition, prevent cultivation failure, and bring more varieties of healthy foods to consumers.

Yet protection for mushroom and plant cultures is not the only important safety consideration in farming. Farmers can develop certain breathing conditions when exposed to dangerous spores released by certain mushroom species or molds found on some plants. Biological safety cabinets provide the highest level of protection.

Plant Tissue Culture Hood

Plant tissue culture is the culturing of small pieces of plant seeds, tissues, explants, organs, cells or protoplasts in a nutrient medium used primarily for three applications. Biotechnology often employs plant tissue culture for crop improvements like virus-free plant propagation. Applications of environmental issues consider conservation strategies like elite gemplasms preservation, while research applications can focus on topics like studies of morphogenesis and cell signaling. Regardless of the specific application, plant tissue culture should be done in aseptic conditions – these can be achieved by using a laminar flow hood during culturing.
